On our travels PG noticed this nasty cash machine scam and took a pic.  Sneaky.

Really excellent news about 6 Music. I don’t think it’s a final decision, but it’s good all the same. Hopefully it’ll stay that way. Looking back on this perhaps in a year or so there may be a silver lining to all this, namely that because the profile of 6 Music has been raised so much, and I think listening figures are up by 40% or something (?) then the new and/or more cutting edge music (i.e. not your mainstream stuff) will have more people discovering it.

When we were on our way to the Dermot O Leary session the other week, we got lost and I asked a guy in the BBC building where we needed to go and he showed us the way to the right building (yeah, we were that lost, wrong building…) and he was asking about me ‘Oh, I am Alex Cornish (who?)…’ etc. and I asked about what he did. He was in strategy and he made a joke about not being the most popular person at the moment. I laughed (’not surprised’) and told him that I wouldn’t be on my way to Radio 2 but for 6 Music. He appreciated the point, and all power to him for listening. It seems they have actually listened. And that is a good thing. There was a concern all the support, all the emails and forum posts to the BBC Trust would be ignored, but they haven’t Good for them and good for us all for taking the time to say something. Just shows. If you stand up and speak out things get done.

Tour Begins & BBC Radio Scotland…

Comments Off, May 14, 2010

Sorry for the delay in posting.  I have actually never been so busy.  This week in particular.  I need to get someone to do this sort of thing for me don’t I?…you know, like famous people do, oh, there is no-one willing to do it, nevermind.  Fact is, I enjoy it, so even if there was someone I’d get them to clean my dirty trainers instead.

So, tonight is the first night of the Caffe Nero tour.  We rehearsed last night and it’s sounding great.  Songs always sound at their best stripped right back, very acoustic, like the way we’re doing them on this tour, full of energy.  See you there…

Last night, on BBC Radio Scotland we were in session for Iain Anderson.  If you want to listen again you can do so right here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00sbgd9#segments

Then tomorrow we have our Dermot O’ Leary session on Radio 2. We are on the show wth Ellie Goulding and Eli Paperboy Brown.  Dermot was such a legend, as were his producers and me and young Bevis had a great time.

Right, I am off.  I will be posting a video tour diary so keep your eyes peeled for lots of travelodge tales…

Onwards,
Alex

Setlist

Pic: Setlist from Saturday…

So, album was mastered Thursday, rehearsed band for 8 hours Friday, bought a new jacket Saturday, did gig Saturday night (where opinion on said jacket was divided…I like it…I do…), limited sleep and then drove for 9 hours back to Scotland. Preparing some radio edits of what are likely to be singles, to be mastered this week, given up smoking, not been able to sleep, checked out my new guitar, which is nearly finished, and it’s all sending me slightly round the twist, especially penultimate one.

Thanks to everyone for coming down on Saturday night to check out the new material. It was a tad rough around the edges, obviously, it was one of the first outings of the new material, but it was great for us to do. It’s a cracking pub, called the Old Nun’s Head – go there, nr East Dulwich / Peckham etc.

So, off to do radio edits, change the album tracklisting, finish the artwork, get promos out there etc etc etc etc. Hard works starts now.

Oh btw Dermot O leary session on Radio 2 scheduled for 15 May…tune in!

Onwards,

Alex

Pic: Me on the Tom Robinson show.

I know everyone is writing about 6 Music being axed, but here is my viewpoint as an artist who works in a very DIY way and has first hand experience of sending out unsolicited CDs to producers at radio shows.

Once you have written and recorded the ‘masterpiece’, it’s time to decide who is likely to play it. This is all inapplicable if you have a wad of cash to pay a radio plugger, I didn’t, so I did it myself. Anyway, there’s no point sending out promo CDs to people who don’t play your sort of music and there’s no point sending it to the wrong address or the wrong producer. There’s also no point in sending it to the majority of commercial stations (XFM down south excepted). You need to spend a long time doing research on the old internet. After I had recorded Until the Traffic Stops first time around I spent said long time on the internet and the telephone (one of the great things about the BBC by the way is that if you telephone the switchboard they have to tell you who the production team for a show is, including the right box no. etc.). At that time, and this was before I had ever been played on the radio, I found that XFM Scotland might play it, so I sent a CD to Jim Gellatly for his new music show. I was also a massive fan of the Tom Robinson show on 6 Music, which at the time was on Monday – Thursday from 7pm to 9.30pm. There was also Vic Galloway’s Radio 1 Introducing show. So, out of all the radio stations, in general terms I had 6 Music, XFM and BBC Introducing on Radio 1. Now XFM Scotland has closed that leaves 6 Music and Radio 1 Introducing. If 6 Music closes it’s the introducing shows on Radio 1 as the only champions of new music, and to be honest they would rarely play my sort of music.

There are two reasons why 6 Music is so important to me:

- the first is that Tom Robinson and his producer picked out my little unsolicited package, which led to it being played, then a session, then someone at 6 Music handed it up to Radio 2 and a year later I got on the Radio 2 palylist. The same thing happened with Jim Gellatly, he picked it up and from there it led to other things. Without those massive leg ups I wouldn’t have had anywhere near the level of the exposure that I have had. There are obviously people at Radio 2 and Radio Scotland who have taken big chances in backing me, but I wouldn’t have got to them without those intial acts of support.

- the second is the new music I have discovered as a fan – I remember hearing ‘ The Ride’ by Joan as Policewoman on 6 Music and buying it right away. There are lots of occasions when that has happened.

So, as a musician where does that leave you? Well, there are obviously blogs and they are great, and I send stuff to blogs already, but as a reader or listener on a blog site you have to be active i.e. you have to actually read and listen to the material on a blog. With the radio, it is more passive – it is on in your home and when you hear something new, you stop, check out the tracklisting online and buy it from itunes or whatever. 6 Music closing is going to leave a massive hole for both those that love discovering and supporting new music and for those musicians trying to reach those potential new fans. I’ll never forget the first time ‘This One’s for You’ was played on the Tom Robinson show – first radio play. A huge thrill. It’s a fucking shame.

Computer Music Interview

Comments Off, Feb 11, 2010

The new edition of Computer Music (issue 149 I think) has an interview with me in it, about how I made my album, how I got it out there. It’s in my humble opinion good advice for any of you budding bands or singer songwriters out there. Lots of good guidance is also available on the Tom Robinson website too.

Finished vocal recordings for the new record on Monday / Tuesday at Watercolour and now putting all together. Can’t wait to finish it.

By the way the single is still on the Radio 2 playlist so keep texting in and requesting it! Radcliffe and Maconie Chris Evans and Dermot O Leary have supported it so target some of the other DJs and get ‘em onside!

Alex

Radio…

Right, Scotland the Brave is on the Radio 2 playlist, whoop. And the Radio Scotland playlist too – yeh. Don’t forget the download bundle out on 1 March also includes a new song, ‘Won’t be Found’ and an acoustic version of Scotland with Mary Ann Kennedy on harp – actually my favourite version. Text in (if you feel so inclined) to 88291 and request the song. It helps stuff get momentum at radio if they get feedback.

Tomorrow I am mixing tracks ready for final vocal takes back at Ardgour on Monday & Tuesday next week. It’ll then be final mixing and we’re done. Live shows soon to be announced by the way…

Good weekends,

Alex
