RECORD OF THE DAY

I was on the Word covermount CD in September 2010

WORD91_COVER+CD_175

Single mix of Once More I’m Put to the Test included on covermount CD in September issue of Word Magazine (in shops 12 August)

Little review of my show at Kelburn Garden Party here:  “Edinburgh resident Alex Cornish’s rousing set also proves to be a real delight. Performing in the Acoustic Tent, Cornish and his band work a set of effortlessly laid-back folkish pop songs, and even pull off some skilled trickery using a violin and a loop pedal”.

And another little mention from the same festival in The List:

In due course we’ll get the propoer excerpts from all the magazines and interviews together. In the meantime, here’s some good bits…

“…a beautifully orchestrated album of rich, dark, ethereal singer-songwriting that evokes the 21st century soundscapes of Radiohead” – Neil McCormick, The Telegraph

“spooked 4am strings and monster choruses” – The Times

“From the sweeping opener to the gorgeous “This One’s for You” and “Lights On” it’s a rich and rewarding ride” – OK! Magazine

“Cornish deserves his burgeoning acclaim” – The Scotsman

“Until the Traffic Stops deserves not only the accolades it has had so far, but to be discovered by a much wider audience” – Verve Magazine

“A DIY gem” – Blah Blah Magazine

“It is only a matter of when, rather than if, he becomes a major star” – Classic Rock Magazine

“…haunting melodic pop from the Edinburgh newcomer – hottest download of the week” The Sunday Times

“Why Alex Cornish isn’t signed to a major label and being flown round the world in a big jumbo jet drinking champagne is beyond me’ – Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music

“Amazing” Dermot O’ Leary Radio 2

“This is amazing’ [debut single] and the album is ‘wonderful” – Jim Gellatly, XFM Scotland

“In the absence of any discernible musical talent, the dream for any music critic, especially at fanzine level, is to find that most elusive of things, which is an artist nobody else has heard about so you can proclaim them from the rooftops triumphantly. After years of searching and false starts, I’ve found him. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Alex Cornish – the man I’m putting my money on to be huge…he has created one of the best albums I have ever heard” – Tasty Fanzine

“Cornish is a bright songwriting talent with heaps of potential” – Music Week

“The album is an absolute belter” – Edinburgh Evening News

“This is a truly brilliant album, I defy you not to love it, go out an buy it – 10/10” – The Beat Surrender

“Surprising myself, I’ve discovered that it’s really worth putting the time into this record. It may not be my sort of music but fuck me, he can really write a tune. There’s a little twist in each song that is eminently sticky and eventually I found myself letting the songs slip, one by one, past my normally immaculate angsty indie-snob defences’ – Song by Toad Fanzine

“…a thing of beauty, a work of total pleasure, a genuinely superb debut [album]…divine’ – ToxicPete

“Cornish has carved out a tune-packed and memorable debut…a DIY gem’ – Is this music? Magazine

“Alex’s music has power, grace and a depth of emotion that one doesn’t always find in pop songs” – Matchbox

I was featured in the arts supplement in the Edinburgh Evening News “Scotland’s answer to David Gray” and also the Scottish Sun

“Alex has the kind of press quotes that most DIY artists could only dream about getting, but this would mean little without the sterling quality of the work, which thankfully is as good as the press he’s generating…a polished talent” – Record of the Day.

“Other stuff – “Gorgeous” said Mark Radcliffe. It was played on the Dermot O’ Leary show on Radio 2 a lot. BBC Radio Scotland (Tom Morton & The Music Bed), Radio 1 (Vic Galloway’s show), XFM Scotland (Jim Gellatly), Leith FM (Graeme Scott) and Northsound have also all given it a few spins. It was “Record of the Day” in, er, “Record of the Day” and Music Week did a little thing on it too. It was the Skinny’s “Single of the Month”. There are reviews all over the place if you are guided by that sort of stuff…I have also done sessions for Radio 2, Radio 1, 6 Music and XFM.
